The AMC Indian Affairs Advisory Committee (IAAC) was created in 2009 to serve as a forum for counties with substantial Native American populations (Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Clearwater, Cook, Goodhue, Hennepin, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Mahnomen, Mille Lacs, Pine, Redwood, Scott, St. Louis and Yellow Medicine) could discuss common issues or concerns counties face either individually or collectively when working with tribal governments. and formulate policy recommendations for the five standing AMC policy committees.

Purpose: To advise the policy committees and/or board of directors on tribal government relations issues.

Responsibilities:

  1. Identify opportunities for improving intergovernmental relationships between counties and tribal governments. 
  2. Identify, review and provide analysis of current state and federal policies and resources related to tribal government relations.
  3. Elevate and focus the discussion regarding intergovernmental relationships between counties and tribal governments through joint meetings and learning sessions.  
  4. Develop and recommend policies related to tribal government relationships for inclusion in the AMC Platform to the appropriate policy committee or the AMC Board of Directors.

Membership: Eighteen counties are located in federally recognized Indian Country and a substantial Native American population resides in Hennepin County.  Each of these 19 counties (Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Clearwater, Cook, Goodhue, Hennepin, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Mahnomen, Mille Lacs, Pine, Redwood, Scott, St. Louis and Yellow Medicine) may designate a delegate and alternate. A chairperson and vice chairperson will be elected by the committee members.

Meetings: Meets in person at the Legislative Conference, Policy Conference, and Annual Conference (no reimbursement for travel or per diem). All other meetings by phone and/or Go-To-Meeting as needed.
