AMC Event Overview

AMC Main

AMC offers a variety of events and educational programs designed to help county commissioners and staff keep up-to-speed on issues, trends and technology.   In addition to these special programs and conferences, AMC promotes member participation through policy committee and district meetings.

We're also continuing to expand our educational programs and events to focus on leadership development for both county officials and staff, through the Futures Task Force.

County Government 101: A conference for newly elected county officials

When:

January of odd-numbered years

Where:

St. Paul

Who:

All newly elected county officials

This important, comprehensive conference is one that no newly elected official should miss! Held every-other January in St. Paul, following county commissioner elections, this conference is specifically designed as an orientation for newly elected county leaders and features several interesting workshops on topics that help make more effective county commissioners.

Legislative Conference

When:

Late March or Early April

Where:

St. Paul

Who: Commissioners, administrators, department heads

AMC Legislative Conference offers county commissioners and staff the opportunity to learn more about legislative issues, refine AMC legislative policy and discuss concerns with legislators.  Workshops on a variety of topics are presented, and proposed resolutions to the legislative platform are considered.  An evening reception gives county officials the chance to meet one-on-one with key legislators.  The conference also features the AMC president’s annual “State of the County” address.

Leadership Development Summit

When:

July/August

Where:

Rotating throughout state

Who: Commissioners, administrators, department heads

AMC’s Leadership Development Summit provides additional training and educational opportunities for county officials.  Workshop content is generally geared toward developing leadership skills, rather than being issue-oriented.  Because the location moves around the state, the summit also includes area tours, which provide insight to the region’s economic and cultural climate.

Annual Conference

When:

First week of December

Where:

Rotating between Twin Cities, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud.

Who: Commissioners, administrators, department heads

The AMC Annual Conference is the premier county government event in Minnesota.  The conference serves as AMC’s annual business meeting, when delegates vote on the legislative platform and elect new officers to the board of directors.  The county Vendor Fair features exhibit booths of products and services for county government.  During the awards banquet, AMC honors exceptional county employees and projects.  Yet education is a major emphasis of the conference, with thought-provoking workshops and general sessions on current hot topics, board leadership skills and technology issues.

District Meetings

When:

 Spring (May/June) and Fall (October)

Where:

Rotating throughout each of AMC’s 10 districts across Minnesota.

Who: Commissioners, administrators, department heads

Counties belong to one of 10 districts. District meetings are held at least two times per year to refine policy positions and provide valuable information on specific county issues. These districts select delegates to serve on AMC’s four policy committees to assist in drafting the Association’s legislative policies.

Policy Committee Meetings

When:

Spring (Legislative Conference)
Summer (August)
Fall (September)
Winter (Annual Conference)

Where:

Rotating

Who: Commissioners, administrators, department heads, lobbyists

More than 130 delegates serve on AMC’s five policy committees: General Government, Environment & Natural Resources, Health & Human Services, Public Safety and Transportation.   The committees draft AMC legislative policies for approval by the full Association.  Every member county is represented by a delegate on at least one of the committees.  The AMC policy development process is carefully constructed to ensure that county officials are actively involved in policy development and understand the issues facing county government. AMC policy statements are developed through a democratic process aimed at reflecting the collective opinion of county commissioners in Minnesota.
