Whitley was elected as NACo's new president at the the association's
annual business meeting in Washoe County, Nevada, in July. In
his acceptance speech Whitley outlined a seven-point agenda for his
term and set as a goal "not only to be a voice in Washington, but a
choice for Washington."
He announced the formation of a
veteran's task force and a new effort to assist the Gulf state
counties in their efforts to deal with the BP oil leak. "We'll have
a heart for the veterans and a hand for our Gulf counties."
Also elected to the new NACo leadership team were: Lenny Eliason,
commissioner, Athens County, Ohio, first vice president; Chris
Rodgers, commissioner, Douglas County, Neb., second vice president;
and Valerie Brown, Sonoma County, Calif., immediate past president.
